→teetering on the brink of dropping out in a qualifying round
Now we feel completely satisfied.
Japan
defeats Cuba to win first World Baseball Classic.
→Last year's champion was defeated in the first rpound. defeatを名詞で使うときは、suffer a serious defeatとか、suffer three successive defeats, undergo a humiliating defeat等のように使います。
In Sunday's mayoral election in Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture, a former city assembly head
won a comparatively easy victory.
Backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito, the 59-year-old independent candidate
defeated the two opponents.
We、Japan, had the last laugh.
