→A local Japanese assembly has passed an ordinance bill to designate February 22nd as "Takeshima Day".
Shimane Prefecture's Assembly voted on Wednesday to establish the day to mark the centennial of a 1905 prefectural notice declaring Takeshima part of Shimane in line with a Cabinet decision. The ordinance is aimed at raising public awareness that the islets belong to Japan. Its supporters say local fishermen have been unable to fish near the islets effectively controlled by South Korea.

During the diplomatic talks, Japan had reportedly said Tokyo would cancel the seabed survey if South Korea drops its plan to propose Korean names for submarine features there during an international conference to decide hydrographic names in June in Germany.
